Olympic History

The Olympics (pronounced uh-lim-pix) is a major international sporting celebration held once every 4 years starting from 1896.

The very first olympics were held on April 6th, 1896. The only events they had were Athletics, Cycling, Fencing, Gymnastics, Shooting, Swimming, Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling. Little medals were won and only men took part. The 1904 olympics held in Saint Louis, Missouri, America were one of the longest running olympic games, many events were introduced, including Archery and Rowing.

in 1916, the olympics were unmistakably cancelled because of WW1, The games came back in 1920 held in Antwerp, Belgium with Athletes such as Nedo Nadi (EpeƩ) and Duke Kahanamoku (Aquatics).

The olympic rings were introduced in Antwerp, they represent the 5 Continents (Red > The Americas, Blue > Europe, Black > Africa, Green > Oceania, Yellow > Asia).

The 1936 olympics were held in Berlin, Germany whilst WW2 Tyrant Adolf Hitler was in charge, The most memorable moment was Jesse Owens triumphantly succeeded the Long Jump, unfortunately Hitler was afraid of giving him a gold medal because we ALL know how much he hated blacks!! (He hated Jews s'well ^_^)

After a 12-year Hiatus (sure you know what a hiatus is, another word for 'break') because of WW2, The olympics immidiately came to London in 1948, The host nation came twelth.

In 1956 the very first Southern Hemisphere Olympics were held in Melbourne, Australia. They had Equestrian which was biblically held in Stockholm, Sweden. Athletes included Vladimir Cuts (Athletics) and Ronnie Delany (Athletics). The 1968 olympics began in Mexico City, it's logo was really weird and athletes felt dumbfounded.

The 1972 olympics were held in Munich, Germany. 6 Days before the Closing ceremony Arab Terrorists destroyed 11 Champions and the games continued in
melancholy, The 1980 Olympics over in Moscow were just as uncanny, they boycotted Americans (Why do they even bother?!?).

The 1984 Olympics were then held in Los Angeles, it was very triumphant because of John Williams' severe theme song, like the 1980 Olympics they boycotted a few countries.

The 1996 Olympics were MASSIVE! They were held in Atlanta, Georgia, it was special because it had been 100 years since the first ones, despite the bombing at the olympic park on the early minutes of Day 8, Many Imperial moments occured with jaw-dropping drama and excitement, such as Michael Johnsons 200m record; 19.32sec.

A Lot of olympic chaos had there ups and downs so in 2004 the Olympics were immidiately sent back to Athens, and nobody can forget Kelly Holmes' eyepopping victory and glory that sent shockwaves across Greece and UK.

We still have the London 2012 Olympics and the Rio 2016 Ones. Who knows if these olympics will be as remarkable as these ones..?
